With Winter fast approaching and many working from home, many of us are opting for casual attire, including UGG boots, which may be doing further damage to your body than you know!

As Podiatrists, we constantly get asked what to wear in Winter? Ugg boots and slippers may feel comfortable and warm; however, they have little to no support for your feet. Over time, this results in the muscles, ligaments and tendons being overstretched and strained. It may lead to conditions including sore legs, ‘tired feet,’ or plantar fasciitis.

Inadequate footwear, including soft and flexible UGG boots, is one of the most significant risk factors that cause Plantar fasciitis. If you feel that you are limping first thing in the morning when taking your first few steps out of bed, you may want to have a look at your UGG boots.
Clinical symptoms include:
– Pain or stiffness in the morning
– Pain that gets worse at the end of the day
– Pain after long periods of sitting
– Pain that refers to your Achilles tendon or calves
– Pain that gets worse climbing stairs or standing on your toes

Ultimately, other structures will take the load, including ankles, knees, legs, hip, or lower back.

UGG boots can also be the cause of a ‘Crumpet foot’. Due to their soft and fluffy interior, your feet will eventually start sweating. The concern regarding this matter is that it creates the perfect environment for bacteria and fungus to grow. It can lead to conditions including Tinea Pedis and a considerable growth of bacteria on your foot which can look like a ‘crumpet’ texture. If you’re looking inside your shoe and it doesn’t look or smell great, it is time for a new pair! If you notice any colour changes or spots on your feet, it is crucial to seek professional help from your Podiatrist.

UGG boots can also be a risk hazard. They have little grip to no grip, which increases the risk of falls, particularly in our elderly patients.
If you are spending your day working from home and doing tasks including your cooking, cleaning, or looking after the kids; it is vital to be wearing adequate footwear with features including:
– A cushioned and firm insole
– The toe box only bending at the front
– A firm heel counter
– Laces or Velcro strap
– The correct width for your foot type

Alternatively, you may choose to wear slippers such as the Archline Slippers. These slippers have an inbuilt orthotic within the sole of the slipper. This design detail is perfect for; Foot pain, heel pain, arch pain, Plantar Fasciitis and Overpronation.
