Your Podiatry Questions Answered

No, you don’t need a referral to see a Podiatrist. However, if you are diabetic you may wish to be referred under EPC through Medicare.

After booking your appointment, you’ll receive an email with a new patient form for you to fill out. Please do so and bring this to your first appointment.

If you’re dealing with biomechanical/foot pain, please also bring the 2 or 3 pairs of shoes you wear most often, as well as any old orthotics you may have. These will help us understand your condition better and enable us to offer the most personalised advice for your treatment.

This depends on if you’ve been referred through your GP under the Enhanced Primary Care Scheme. If you have, Podiatry is included under Medicare for five discounted appointments per year. Podiatry is only included under Medicare only if you have been referred through your GP under the Enhanced Primary Care Scheme/MBS Chronic Disease Management Arrangements. Usually you are allocated up to 5 visits per year. From July 1st 2025 the Government introduced changes to EPC/MBS Schemes & there is now a small GAP fee. Patients pay for the appointment in clinic then Medicare sends them the rebate to the bank account linked to their Medicare card, and patients end up with a small GAP payment.

If you experience any foot or ankle pain or discomfort, you should make an appointment with a podiatrist. You should also make an appointment if you notice any changes in how your feet appear or function, such as if you notice any swelling, redness, numbness, tingling, or any sores or wounds that don’t heal. Doing so as soon as possible will give your podiatrist the greatest opportunity to address any issues before they become more troublesome.

The number of sessions you will need will vary depending on your condition, its severity, and how it impacts you. As this is very individualised, your podiatrist will talk through your expectations with you during your initial appointment.
