As we move into the warmer months, many of us are swapping closed shoes for sandals or Archies Thongs & Slides, and also going barefoot more often. But with the change in footwear (or lack thereof) often comes a common and uncomfortable issue – cracked heels. Our Podiatrist Abe writes about cracked heels, why they happen and how to get your feet summer ready.
Why Do Heels Crack?
Cracked heels occur when the skin around the heel becomes dry, thickened, and less elastic, causing it to split under pressure. A few common contributing factors include:
- Wearing open-back footwear, which exposes the skin to air and friction
- Dry weather and heat, which strip moisture from the skin
- Standing for long periods, especially on hard floors
- Callus build-up that increases pressure on the heel margins
- Certain skin or medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, eczema, psoriasis, thyroid disorders)
Why Cracked Heels Need Attention
Aside from being unsightly or uncomfortable, deep heel fissures can become painful or infected, particularly if the cracks bleed or if the skin barrier is compromised. For anyone with diabetes or poor circulation, even small cracks can pose a risk of infection.
Safe Home Care for Cracked Heels
- Soak your feet regularly.
A short foot soak (10–15 minutes) in warm water helps soften thickened skin and allows moisturisers to penetrate more effectively. You can add a mild soap or a small amount of Epsom salts if desired. - Moisturise daily.
Apply a rich heel balm immediately after soaking or showering while the skin is still slightly damp. Look for products containing urea, lanolin, or shea butter – these ingredients help draw moisture into the skin and keep it supple. We have Walker’s Urea 25 Ultra Heel Cream & ACE Premium Hydrating Coconut Luxe Urea 30 Foot Cream for sale in our Thornbury clinic. - Avoid harsh exfoliation.
Tools like pumice stones, metal files, or foot graters can damage the skin and worsen fissures. It’s best to leave any callus reduction to your Podiatrist, who can safely debride thickened areas. - Choose supportive footwear.
Open-back shoes and thongs can make heels drier and allow the fat pad to expand, increasing pressure and cracking. Opt for well-cushioned, enclosed shoes or sandals with heel straps when possible. Our Podiatrists recommend Archies Thongs & Slides. They provide Podiatrist approved arch support this spring & summer. - Stay hydrated.
Keeping your body hydrated supports overall skin health. Drink plenty of water.
Professional Care Makes a Difference
At your Podiatry appointment, we can safely remove thickened callus, treat any fissures, and provide advice tailored to your skin and foot type. In some cases, heel fissures can be linked to underlying biomechanical issues – something we can assess and manage as part of your treatment plan.
