How Cold Weather Affects Your Feet

Winter is well and truly upon us, meaning our feet are at risk of complications from being cold. Cold feet can occur for a number of different reasons but usually occur due to reduced blood flow to the lower extremities/ feet. If your feet are colder than the rest of your body this could be a reason for further investigation by your local GP or Podiatrist. Our Podiatrist Ebony delves into how cold weather can affect your feet:

What are the signs and symptoms of cold feet:

  • White toes
  • Red or shiny toes
  • Blue or purple toes
  • Swollen toes
  • Throbbing/ sharp pain in toes

What conditions that cause the above cold feet:

  • Poor blood flow
  • Heart disease/ blockages
  • Hormonal conditions
  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Raynaud’s phenomenon
  • Chilblains

How can a Podiatrist help you with Cold Feet?
A Podiatrist can help by performing a neurovascular foot assessment which consists of assessing your blood flow and sensation. This will indicate if you have adequate blood flow and feeling in your feet, if your Podiatrists interpret any issues they may refer you back to your GP for a Duplex Ultrasound (ultrasound of the arteries in your legs) to see if there are any blockages affecting your blood flow.

Advice on maintaining warmth in your feet:

  • Wear socks as much as possible (even to bed)
  • Wear shoes as much as possible
  • Regularly exercise to help circulate blood flow
  • Rub vicks vapour rub or hirudoid cream into toes to help maintain open blood vessels
  • Avoid extreme water temperatures (as this can constrict blood vessels)
