Podiatrist Nikki’s Winter Foot Care Tips

Our Podiatrist Nikki has come up with some handy Winter Foot Care tips to help you and your feet survive the cold months ahead!

Winter is coming (believe it or not, considering the warm Autumn we’ve had!!). It’s looking like the cold weather will be more sudden this year and probably a bit of a shock to your feet that have been able to air out a bit longer this year.

Why Winter Foot Care Matters

Cold weather can lead to:

  •  Dry, cracked skin
  • Chilblains and poor circulation
  •  Fungal infections from damp footwear
  •  Increased risk of falls due to slippery surfaces

Nikki’s Top Winter Foot Care Tips

  1. Keep Feet Warm, But Not Sweaty

–  Wear thermal socks made of natural fibres including (wool, cotton, bamboo).

– Avoid tight shoes or multiple layers that restrict blood flow.

  • Moisturize Daily
  • Use a thick, foot cream or ointment, especially on heels and soles.
  •  Avoid moisturizing between the toes (this can encourage fungal growth).

3. Check Your Feet Daily (Especially for Diabetics)

– Look for cracks, redness, blisters, or signs of frostbite.

– Use a mirror or ask for help if you have trouble seeing the bottoms of your feet.

4. Change Wet Socks Immediately

– Wet socks increase the risk of fungal infections and cold-related injuries.

–  Always carry a spare pair if you are in wet conditions.

5. Choose Proper Footwear

– Waterproof, insulated boots with non-slip soles are best.

– Make sure shoes fit properly to avoid blisters or pressure points.
